NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley boys and girls cross country teams both placed second at the IAC Large School Division meet here Tuesday.
The Cardinals boasted a trio of top-10 finishers in the boys race and two more in the girls meet.
BOYS
Leland Houston paced NV with a 6th-place finish, clocking in at 19:11.5.
Marcos Escalante and Camden King took ninth and 10th respectively. Escalante posted a time of 20:05.6 and King was close behind at 20:07.2.
Rhyley Payne came in 25th with a time of 21:02 and Sheldon Houston rounded out the team scoring in 27th at 21:08.1.
Lansing, led by winner Trent Thibault, claimed the team title with 64 points while NV had 72 and third-place Trumansburg had 79 in the eight-team event.
Also competing for Newark Valley were Hunter Tyrrell (48th, 12 23:31.8), Andrew Lelik (49th, 23:35), Reese Illsley (50th, 23:56.8) and Rex Chapman (63rd, 25:51.8).
GIRLS
Hadley Merrill and Brook Illsley posted a 3-4 finish to pace the Cardinals. Merrill recorded a time of 21:56.9 and Illsley crossed the finish line in 22:09.2.
Olivia Vaughn placed 11th in 24:31.2, Malerie Gregrow was 15th with a time of 25:16.5 and Savannah Beebe wrapped up the team scoring in 17th at 25:53.7 94.
Trumansburg won the team championship behind race winner Niveck VonBergen, scoring 34 points. NV and Lansing both finished with 50 points in the 7-team event, but the Cardinals took the tie-breaker on No. 6 runner Leah Lansing's 18th place finish with a time of 26:01.6.
NV’s other runners included Emily LaPorte (20th, 26:17.4), Elle Webb (23rd, 26:28.7), Abigail Escalante (26th, 26:45.3), Nora McCann (29th, 27:24), Kaitlyn Bohne (34th, 28:24.2), Charlotte Vaughn (35th, 28:30.1) and Peyton Rhodes (37th, 28:46.5).
MODIFIED BOYS
Newark Valley scored 44 points to nip Watkins Glen for the team title by one point.
Blake Roberts took third for the Cardinals in 10:35.2 and Jacob Elliott was fourth in 10:40.5.
James Phillips placed 10th with a time of 11:10.6, Charles Gregrow was 13th in 12:19.8 and Gavin Gilmartin claimed 15th with a 12:31.9.
Other NV competitors were Liam Colgan (22nd, 13:35.1), Waylon Jones (23rd, 13:35.3), Logan Stoeckel (26th, 13:57.2), Charles Buckley (37th, 18:47.3) and Nathan Tomazin (38th, 18:49.4).
MODIFIED GIRLS
Rebecca Kelsey was the lone runner for the Cardinals, placing 20th with a time of 19:56.9.
Newark Valley hosts the Bob Greene/Newark Valley Invitational on Friday.
