SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: AFTON-HARPURSVILLE KNOCKS OFF SVEC, 4-2 (2025-09-15)

AFTON, N.Y. — SVEC dug a deep hole, but played Afton-Harprusville tough for a 60 minutes in a 4-2 setback here Monday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.

"We fought hard tonight against an experienced team made up of mostly seniors," said SVEC coach Abby Gentile. "We were able to take advantage of a couple opportunities inside the circle. 

"Our defense, anchored by Kaidince Root and Olly Hinkle, did a great job tonight.

"We continue to show improvement each game," added Gentile. "I am excited to see where we will be by the end of the season."

Adriana Hartman gave A-H the lead with a goal just 2 1/2 minutes into the game, but defense ruled the remainder of the and A-H led 1-0 at the intermission.

With 9:43 left in the third quarter, Abbey Paoletti gave A-H added cushion, and 50 seconds later Miranda Schultz made it 3-0.

Maddy Gentile put SVEC on the board with 5:04 left in the third quarter, but Paoletti capped A-H's scoring less than a minute later to make it 4-1.

Brooke Ryan, off a feed from Maddy Gentile, scored with 8:59 remaining in game to provide the final margin.

"The first goal came off of a corner when we were able to push a rebound past the goalie," said Gentile. "The second goal was off of a fast break."

A-H had a 10-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.

SVEC, now 3-3, hosts M-E Thursday.
