SPENCER — SVEC scored three goals in the first quarter, and that was ll it needed in a 3-0 win over longtime rival Tioga here Monday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.
"We started off strong getting a three-goal lead in the first quarter, however, after that we couldn’t find the back of the goal," said SVEC coach Abby Gentile.
"The girls worked hard and controlled the game tonight," she added. "We just need to work on finishing inside the offensive circle."
Brooke Ryan started the scoring for the Eagles, taking a feed from Mally Hinkle with 9:49 remaining in the first quarter and finding the metal in the back of the cage.
About 2 1/2 minutes later, Kendall Gentile, off a feed from Maddy Gentile, beat the Tioga keeper to make it 2-0.
Sophia Delmage, off an assist from Megan Williamson, finished off the scoring with 1:03 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Eagle defense limited Tioga to just one shot-on-goal, and had an 8-1 advantage in that category. SVEC had a 20-2 edge in penalty corners.
Vangie Decker had nine saves in the cage for Tioga, and Sophie Sunday and Kaylee Kastenhuber combined for one for SVEC.
SVEC, now 3-1, travels to face four-time defending state champion Whitney Point Wednesday, while Tioga (0-3) travels to Vestal.
