NEWFIELD - Candor was able to hang with host Newfield for a half before losing steam down the stretch in a 54-41 IAC South Small School makeup loss here Saturday.
"Newfield is a very talented team, and even though they were missing one of their key pieces, other players stepped up and gave them what they needed," said Candor head coach Carl Kanoff. The Trojans were playing without leading scorer Katie Moravec due to injury.
Newfield's scoring was led by Jenna Goodwin's 23 points and Kelly Moravec's 17. Goodwin converted numerous steals to layups, including two traditional 3-point plays. Moravec hit five 3-pointers.
The game started out as a back-and-forth battle with Newfield coming out of the first quarter with a 15-9 lead. The Indians, on three Searra Allen fast-break layups, and a buzzer beating three by Kadianna Foster, cut the Trojans' lead to 26-23 going into the half.
Kelly Moravec got hot behind the arc in the third, hitting a trio of threes. Candor's Jennah Kareem answered with one of her own, but the Indians were unable to get any closer than six the rest of the game.
Braelyn Hornick led the Indians with 16 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Allen had a similar night, scoring 10 and also missing a double-double with nine boards. Allen and Jen Hopkins had four steals apiece.
"We played much better than we did Friday night," Kanoff said. "Unfortunately, even though we cut down our turnovers, those that we had turned into immediate points on the other end. If we can take care of the ball a little better and keep scoring, we should end the regular season on a good note."
Candor (6-10) hosts Spencer S-VE this evening for Senior Night and Thomas Edison Thursday for the last regular season game.
Division champ Newfield is now 15-1.
