NORWICH — The Owego boys golf team nearly pulled off the upset, coming close in a 214-219 loss to Norwich in STAC action at Canasawacta Country Club here Wednesday.
Owego head coach Chris Evans called it an “incredibly close match.”
“We almost did it, five stroke difference,” he said. “Kids played well. We are getting better every day.”
Duke Snyder led the River Hawks with a 41, just ahead of Sawyer Prentiss, who carded a 42.
Connor Kotski followed with a 44, Carter Rieg contributed a 45 and Jordan Snyder tacked on a 47. Beckett Tirinato posted a non-scoring 49.
Medalist honors went to Purple Tornado standout Brevin Bennett, who recently won the Nick DiNunzio Memorial Golf Tournament. He shot an even-par 37.
Matt Brunick added a 43, Mike Brunick and Charlie Smith both shot 44, and Gavin Burrell rounded out the scoring with a 46. Jacob Lobdell had a non-scoring 52.
The defending Section IV Class B champions improved to 2-0 with the win.
Owego (1-3) heads to Golden Oak Golf Course in Windsor Thursday to face the Black Knights (0-1).
