ENDICOTT - Owego's Jaelyn Chrysler had another successful showing on day two of the Section IV Track And Field State Qualifiers, earning a trip to states for the second time in as many days, with a top finish in the 1500-meters for Class B.
Day two did not get off to the best of starts for OFA track and field. Stella Palladino who was scheduled to compete in both the 100 and 200-meter dash finals, suffered an injury in the 100-meter, which also forced her out of the 200m event on Thursday.
Palladino does qualify for the state meet however, having clocked the state standard earlier in the season.
"It was heartbreaking to watch her in the 100m. Stella has worked so hard for this all season and was the top seeded runner in both sprint events. Hopefully she will be able to complete next week," said coach, Scott Senko.
The shining moment of Owego's day two at state qualifiers was Jaelyn Chrysler earning a trip to the state championships in her second event. Chrysler ran a season best 5:05.43 to take fourth overall in the girls' 1500-meter run. Abby McHugh finished 10th in the event with a time of 5:27.93.
"Jaelyn had a great day on the track. Despite the heat, she was able to run a very consistent race and pull away from the other Class B competitors. She is having a great season and I think that she will run her best times next week at the state meet," commented coach Senko.
Owego's 4x800-meter relay consisting of Gavin Heath, Bryson Castro, Ryker Chrysler, and Magavin Allen ran 10:32.64, but fell short to Vestal in the Class B division.
In the 4x800 relay on the girls' side, Owego clocked 10:32.64, but was again edged out in Class B by Vestal. The relay was made up of Jaelyn Chrysler, Sidney Senko, Madison McEvoy, and Abby McHugh.
"We were optimistic about the chances of the boys and girls 4x800m relay teams. Both teams ran well today, but lost to talented Vestal teams and will not advance to the state meet. I am really proud of the effort of these kids. They worked hard all season to get themselves in this position. Several of them ran their best times of the season, but Vestal was better today. The future looks bright for Owego middle distance runners," added coach Senko.
Dylan Davis threw 41-feet in the discus event for Owego, which earned him a 15th place finish. Davis should be near the top in returning throwers for Class B next season. Owego's Heath, Castro, Allen, and Jaxson Belokur clocked 3:36.94 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish 10th overall. Lilly LaFever ran a time of 8:51.97 to place third in Class B for the girls' 2000m steeplechase.
