OWEGO - Madison McEvoy netted her 200th career goal, while goalie, Shannon Maslin recorded her 500th career save in a home victory over Vestal, 12-6 on Thursday.
The River Hawks spent much of the first half defending in their own territory. Vestal scored first and OFA wouldn't tie it up until a Lexi Herceg goal with 4:37 left in the second quarter.
Vestal then scored back-to-back goals to go up 3-1, but Madison McEvoy snapped one in with 45 seconds left to bring Owego within a score at the break. Maslin had several big stops in the first half for OFA, including a save that was the senior's 500th in a stellar career.
In the second half it was all Owego. McEvoy found the net at the 6:39 mark of the third quarter to earn her 200th career goal.
Herceg hit the back of the net two more times as well, while Jenna McEvoy scored four times in the second half. Amelia Sherman added a pair of goals and Natalie Morris also chipped in a score for the River Hawks.
Sherman, Keira Henry and Bella Silvestri racked up three ground balls each on the night. Maslin finished the game with 14 saves, while Madison McEvoy also helped out with three assists.
When asked about their career milestones, Maslin and McEvoy were both humble and quick to praise their teammates.
"This isn't just something I did. My teammates helped me accomplish this by making the shots easier to stop. The defense just does an amazing job to help me," said Maslin.
"It feels great, but I wouldn't be here without the rest of my team," added McEvoy.
Both Owego standouts know there is more work to be done however, and they're looking forward to the postseason.
"The focus is on getting to sectionals and getting a win. As long as we keep working together as a team, I think we have a pretty good chance," added Maslin.
When asked about what the River Hawks can focus on heading into playoffs, McEvoy believes it's fine tuning the basics.
"Our sticks weren't the best today, so we definitely need to focus on our passing and our catching. Just the simple basics. You can win any game as long as you can pass and catch as a team," said McEvoy.
Coach Ashlee Marsh is hoping the momentum of this current nine game win streak will carry with her team as the regular season winds down.
"I say it all the time, but I love the chemistry between the girls on the field, and their ability to see each other even if it's not a specific play. I'm hoping we can keep building off of that," said Marsh.
Owego is back in action on May 12th at Union-Endicott.
