By TIM BIRNEYTioga County Sports ReportALBANY — Newark Valley senior Trevor Middendorf was knocked into the consolation bracket after a close loss, but is one win away from the medal stand, while senior Austin DeBolt bowed up out in the last match here Friday night at the New York State Division 2 Wrestling Championships at MVP Arena.
Middendorf, the third seed at 124 pounds, began his day with a 9-2 win over Mount Sinai's Shane Wells int he opening round.

In the quarterfinals, Middendorf dropped a 10-6 decision to sixth-seeded Dylan Newman of Falconer.

Middendorf registered a shakedown with 16 seconds remaining in the second period to tie the bout at 6-6.
Newman escaped off the third-period whistle to take a 7-6 lead, then fended off Middendorf's leg attacks the entire third period before sealing the win with a takedown with 3 seconds remaining.
"Trevor had a couple very questionable calls go against him in that match," said Newark Valley coach Eric D'Arcy.
"I think there were two takedowns that they didn't give him ... those are the things we don't have control over.
"Hopefully, he comes back tomorrow and wrestles well," added D'Arcy. "He's a high-energy kid and I expect him to come back and do well."
DeBolt opened the day with a pin of Carle Place's Max Ortega in 5:53.
Ortega opened the scoring with a takedown midway through the first period, but DeBolt answered with a reversal 10 seconds later to close the gap to 3-2.
DeBolt scored a quick escape in the second period to tie the bout at 3-3, and the final 1:51 was spent up right.
Ortega chose bottom to start the third, and DeBolt kept him on the mat before getting the turn for the fall in the closing seconds.
In the quarterfinals, DeBolt lost via third-period fall to Williamson-Marion-Sodus' Zach Kuelling.
DeBolt bounced back in the consolation bracket with a pin of Ausable Valley's Nathan Rondeau in 1:55, but lost via fall to Schalmont's Hans Wiederkehr in 4:29 in his next consolation-round bout.
"Overall, I thought Austin (DeBolt) wrestled great," said D'Arcy. "Austin did a nice job ... he had nothing to lose.
"If you had said four years ago that (Austin) was going to be at States, I would have said you were full of it — there's no way.
He has done a great job, and come a long way in four years," noted D'Arcy. "He's one of the most improved kids we've every coached.
"We are very pleased, and truly happy for him," added D'Arcy. "We will truly miss him."
Action begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
