SECTION IV BOYS BASKETBALL: FOSTER POWERS CANDOR TO 61-46 WIN OVER B-G IN CLASS C OPENER (24 PHOTOS) (2025-02-25)
Tioga County Sports ReportCANDOR — Jakobe Foster erupted for 24 of his game-high 34 points in the second half to lead Candor to a 61-46 win over Bainbridge-Guilford here Tuesday night in the opening round of the Section IV, Class C boys basketball playoffs.
This was a great win for us because we knew B-G was coming very well prepared with a fantastic coach and a few seniors not ready to be done," said Candor coach Nate Thomas. "They put up a great fight with amazing play from (Michael Lipani) and (Aiden Haines) ... even after going down early they didn’t quit, that is a testament to their great coaching staff.
"We started the game playing really well and for the most part we took care of business," noted Thomas. "There was a turning point in the second (quarter), where I thought Jason Jantz single-handedly took our team to the next level on defense.
"At this time of the season, the goal is survive and advance, even if it is ugly, and tonight was a little ugly," added Thomas. "We loved how our guys stayed the course throughout the game and trusted the scout we put together."
Foster knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the first quarter, and Donald Makie added a 3-pointer to help the Coyotes to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.
B-G outscored Candor, 16-11, in the second quarter, in spite of 3-pointers by Foster and Taegan Kwiatkowski, to close the gap to 25-22 at the halftime intermission.
Foster lit up the scoreboard for 15 points in the third quarter. He canned a pair of 3-pointers, and was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line to fuel an 18-12 run to give the Coyotes a 43-34 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Foster had nine points, including a 3-pointer, and Makie added seven points, including a pair of long-range bombs, as Candor closed the game with an 18-12 run.
Foster led Candor with 34 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and four steals, while Makie had 13 points and three assists, and Carson Heidl added seven points, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot.
Matt Smith grabbed five rebounds in the win, and Ryan Huizinga chipped in with four boards.
Aiden Haines and Isaiah Hampton led B-G with 11 points apiece, while Tim Kintner added nine points, and Michael Lipani chipped in with six.
Candor will now travel to third-seeded Trumansburg, which beat Richfield-ODY, 84-42, Friday for a Class C quarter-final match-up.
"Friday will be a great challenge against a fantastic group of players," said Thomas.
