THE WEEK AHEAD: STATE WRESTLING TAKES CENTER STAGE; BOWLING STATE QUALIFIERS, HOOP PLAYOFFS ALSO ON TAP (2024-02-24)
Tioga County Sports ReportTIOGA COUNTY — The New York State wrestling season comes to a close this weekend, with the girls and boys championships at the MVP Arena in Albany, while Section IV's best bowlers converge on Waverly for the State Qualifier Thursday and Friday, and the Section IV basketball postseason tips off Tuesday.
There are nine events on the docket this week, but that could swell 10 or 11 if one or both of the Candor basketball teams win their opening-round Sectional playoff games.
The following are all of the home varsity events this week, and a few of the notable road events:
MONDAY
No events scheduled.
TUESDAY (1)• Candor hosts Bainbridge-Guilford in the opening round of the Section IV, Class C boys basketball playoffs.
WEDNESDAY (1)• Candor hosts Delhi in the opening round of the Section IV, Class C girls basketball playoffs.
THURSDAY (2)• SVEC junior Tayah Beach and Dallas Bohling will compete at the inaugural NYSPHSAA women's wrestling championships.
• Candor and Owego will compete at the Section IV Boys Bowling State Qualifier at the Valley Bowling Center in Waverly.
FRIDAY (3)• Newark Valley and Owego will each send two wrestlers to the New York State Division 2 Championships at the MVP Arena in Albany.
• The Newark Valley and Candor girls will compete at the Section IV Boys Bowling State Qualifier at the Valley Bowling Center in Waverly.
• Owego travels to Oneonta for a Section IV, Class A boys basketball playoff match-up.
SATURDAY (2)• It's Day 2 of the New York State Division 2 wrestling championships.
• Owego travels to Oneonta for a Section IV, Class A girls basketball playoff match-up.
