IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN 46-41 LOSS TO WHITNEY POINT IN LARGE SCHOOL TITLE GAME (2025-02-20)

WHITNEY POINT — Whitney Point used a big third quarter, then held off a Newark Valley comeback bid in the fourth quarter to pull out a 46-41 win here Wednesday night in the overall IAC Large School junior varsity girls basketball championship game.

"The girls put on a great game for the fans," said Newark Valley coach Chuck Schneider. "I’m incredibly proud of how hard they played tonight.

"It was a hard-fought battle, and the team showed a relentless, never-give-up attitude," he noted. "Even when they found themselves down by 10 points going into the fourth (quarter), they didn’t quit.

"Instead, they fought back with determination, closing the gap to three points in the final moments, just coming up short.

"It has been an honor coaching this team," added Schneider. "Their heart, dedication, and resilience created an extraordinary season to remember."

Brianna Noble scored six points in the first quarter to help Newark Valley to a 12-11 lead after the opening stanza.

Whitney Point used an 11-7 spurt in the second quarter to take a 22-19 halftime lead, then extended its lead with a 15-8 third-quarter run to take a 37-27 lead into the final stanza.

Brianna Noble and Gabby James each knocked down 3-pointers, and scored five points apiece used a 14-7 run to close the gap 44-41 in the final minute, before the Eagles sealed the win with a bucket.

Brianna Noble led Newark Valley with 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Maddy Noble had eight points, seven boards, and three steals, and Natalie Wandell had six points, six rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot.

James added five points, nine rebounds, six assists, and one blocked shot for the Cardinals, while Peyton Rhodes hauled down 10 rebounds and one blocked shot, Elle Webb had four points, four rebounds, and one blocked shot, and Leah Lansing chipped in with four points.

Allison Williams led Whitney Point with 19 points, and Bree Bechtel added 10 points.

Newark Valley wraps up the season with a 14-5 record.
