IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE RALLIES TO EDGE MARATHON, 35-34, IN OVERALL SMALL SCHOOL TITLE GAME (w / Team Photo) (2025-02-16)
Tioga County Sports ReportMARATHON — Down 12 late in the third quarter, S-VE used its pressure defense to close the game with a 18-5 run for a 35-34 win over Marathon in the overall IAC Small School Division girls basketball championship game.
"They were much bigger than us inside, and presented a tough task for us on the boards, but we were able to control the glass late in the second half, and that was huge for us," said S-VE coach Jeremy Kastenhuber.
After a 6-6 first quarter that featured five points by S-VE's Amani Diboun, the Olympians used a 15-5 run to take a 21-11 lead into the halftime locker room.
Marathon opened the third quarter with an 8-6 spurt to take a 29-17 lead with 3 minutes remaining.
S-VE scored the final bucket of the third quarter to close the gap to 29-19, then outscored Marathon 12-5 in the fourth quarter, behind seven points from Trinity Dashler.
S-VE took the lead with 2 minutes remaining, and held on for the win. Marathon had two possessions in the final 9 seconds, but could not connect.
Dashler led S-VE with 15 points, including the team's only 3-pointer, seven rebounds, and four steals, while Diboun had eight points and four rebounds, and Madelyn Ellison added seven points, seven rebounds, four steals, and one blocked shot.
Kelsey Swayze chipped in with four points and four rebounds in the win, and Kendall Gentile had four boards, seven steals, five assists, and one blocked shot.
S-VE wraps up the season at 12-4.
