SECTION IV GIRLS WRESTLING: SVEC’S BEACH, BOHLING QUALIFY FOR STATE TOURNAMENT (2025-02-15)

WAVERLY — Spencer-Van Etten/Candor standout Tayah Beach won her second consecutive Section IV girls wrestling championship here Saturday, pinning all three opponents in the first period.

The junior will compete in the inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Championships Feb. 27 and will be joined by teammate Dallas Bohling, who garnered runner-up honors.

Competing at 120 pounds, Beach, who won a sectional title at 126 in 2024, made quick work of Deposit/Hancock’s Teeghan Tarbox and Ithaca’s Rayna Coller, scoring falls in 30 and 26 seconds, respectively. In the championship bout, she faced Horseheads standout Chloe Owen and put her to her back for another pin in 1:42.

“It's a feeling like I've never felt before,” Beach said of winning another sectional title. “I worked hard to get here, had a rough beginning of the season, but it’s starting to play off. “

It was the 15th consecutive win for Beach, who struggled at times in the early part of the season.

“I started getting my weight back up, started going the gym a lot more, pushing my pace in practice, a lot more drilling with different teams and working when I didn't have to,” she said.

Beach’s ability to dominate with upper body throws has made her a tough foe. She possesses upper body strength, and over the past couple of the seasons has become more aggressive and more confident in her abilities.

“She's so confident in that position,” SVEC coach Jesse Buck said. “I'm confident when she gets there and she's just got the feel for it. She knows what to do, so she's really good at winning the tie and really getting into what she likes to do from that position and really working her own tie. “

Bohling’s second-place finish at 114 earned the sophomore a wild card entry into the state tournament. She opened the tournament against Tioga’s Aly Chamberlain and scored a fall in 1:46, then followed that with another fall against Waverly’s Sydney Rosenbloom in 1:31.

In the semifinals, Bohling posted a 10-0 technical fall over Kendra Williams of Chenango Forks, setting up another meeting with Isabella Phelps of Bainbridge-Guilford/Harpursville/Sidney/Unatego. Phelps, a two-time NYSPHSAA Girls Invitational bronze medalist, won her second straight sectional title with a 50-second pin.

“I'm not upset about it,” Bohling said of her showing. “Bella's a great wrestler and I've come a long way.”

This will be the second trip to a NYSPHSAA championship event for Beach (26-8) and Bohling (28-7), both having competed in the invitational last year.

“I'm pretty excited and I think I'm going to do better this year,” Bohling said.

Like Beach, Bohling has put in the extra work and has also progressed through workouts with the Crown City Wrestling Club in Cortland.

The Eagles had two other competitors at sectionals in Taylor Zufall at 114 and Katelynn Vanetten at 235. Both wrestlers were 0-2 on the day.

Waverly won the team title with 114.5 points, besting Horseheads by five points in the 24-team event. Oneonta was third (104) and Chenango Forks took fourth (103). Other Tioga County teams included Tioga (7th, 87.5), SVEC (13th, 51.5) and Owego (14th, 44.5).

Qualifying two wrestlers for the first “true” state championship tournament should bolster SVEC’s program.

“It's fantastic,” Buck said. “Her and Dallas, and I will say Kate as well, are headliners of the program.”
