IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: FIRST-QUARTER BLITZ PROPELS NEWARK VALLEY TO 62-51 WIN OVER OXFORD (2025-02-13)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley raced out to an early double-digit lead en route to a 62-51 win over Oxford here Thursday night in non-league boys basketball action.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-12 on the season, and are just one win away from clinching a postseason berth. They host Trumansburg Friday in their season finale.

"This was a really good win against one of the top teams in the MAC," said Newark Valley coach Scott Stratton.

"Our defensive energy was intense, we knocked down shots, and finished the game by rebounding, taking care of the ball, and making free throws," noted Stratton. "It was an excellent all-around team effort,.

"A win on Friday earns us a spot in the Section 4 playoffs, he added. "The guys have really hit their stride in the last couple weeks. They recognize in themselves how well they've been playing together and are steeped in confidence and enthusiasm."

Tom Wojtysiak knocked down a pair of free throws in the third quarter, while Anthony Dougher, who was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line also scored six points, and Austin Green canned a 3-pointer and scored five points to fuel a game-opening 19-5 blitz.

Green scored six points in the second quarter, and Dourgher and Tristan Veruto scored five points apiece as Newark Valley  used an 18-14 scoring advantage to extend its lead to 37-19 heading into the halftime locker room.

The Cardinals offense sputtered a bit in the third quarter, and Oxford used a 16-8 run to close the gap to 45-35 heading into the final eight minutes.

Dougher scored eight points in the fourth quarter, and Wojtysiak added six points as the Cardinals used a 17-16 advantage in the stanza to nail down the win.

Newark Valley made it a bit more difficult than it needed to be in the fourth quarter, making just 8 of 22 free-throw attempts in the final stanza.

Dougher led four Newark Valley players in double-figures with 20 points, while Green scored 16 points, Wojtysiak added points, and Veruto chipped in with 10 points.

Oxford falls to 11-6 on the season.
