IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY SHAKES OFF ROUGH SECOND QUARTER TO TOP LANSING, 57-35 (2025-02-05)
Tioga County Sports ReportLANSING — Newark Valley got off to a fast start, endured a rough second quarter, and pulled away in the second half for a 57-35 win over Lansing here Wednesday night in IAC Large School basketball action.
“The girls played a great first quarter and got off to a hot start," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"We cooled off in the second quarter but got things going again in the second half for a nice win on the road," he added.
Adrianna Rich keyed Newark Valley's 20-3 first-quarter blitz with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
The Bobcats used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to get back in the game, and close the gap to 22-17 at the half.
Rich knocked down two more 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Livia Short added four points to fuel a 17-8 run to push the Cardinal lead to 39-25 entering the final eight minutes.
Kam Short canned a 3-pointer and scored five points in the final stanza, and Haven Aylesworth added four points in a game-closing 18-10 run for the Cardinals.
Rich led Newark Valley with a career-high 21 points, four rebounds, and three steals, and Kam Short had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.
"Richie (Adrianna Rich) had a hot shooting night that helped her have a career high in points, which was great to see," said Schweiger. "Kam (Short) had one of her best rebounding nights, which helped her to have a double-double.”
Aylesworth scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds for the Cardinals, while Adriana Finta had six points, six rebounds, four assists, six steals, and one blocked shot, Livia Short had six points and four boards, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski added six points.
Nasia White led Lansing with 17 points and Marissa Nolan added 10 points.
Newark Valley, now 12-4, returns to action Friday when it hosts Notre Dame.
