IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR ROLLS PAST S-VE; CLINCHES SECOND DIVISION TITLE IN A ROW (24 PHOTOS) (2025-02-04)
Tioga County Sports ReportCANDOR — An early 17-0 run propelled Candor to a 54-14 win over Spencer-VanEtten, and its second IAC South Small School Division girls basketball title in a row here Tuesday night.
The Coyotes got a little help Tuesday to clinch the division title. After its win clinched a share of the title, Marathon knocked off O-M to finish off the deal.
“We had a goal at the end of last season to go back to TC3 as repeat champs," said Candor coach Carl Kanoff. "I told the girls this preseason that they’d have to earn it, and they certainly have.
"I’m incredibly proud of this group of young ladies and what they’ve overcome and built upon the last three seasons,” added Kanoff.
Claire Rollins opened the scoring with a lay-up, but was quickly answered by S-VE's Kaidince Root at the other end.
A possession later an Emmi Makie bucket would give the Coyotes the lead for good as they went on a run that saw three baskets from Hazel Ray and a bucket each from Makie and Shawna Conklin. Rollins added a free throw for the final, 15-2, tally.
“We’ve been trying to play a little up-tempo for the last few games, trying to dictate the pace of the beginning of the games and getting our defense to generate some offense," said Kanoff.
"The girls have really responded to that style of play and it’s built big leads for us," he noted.
"Once again, our rebounding was gritty, and offensively we are starting to see and make passes to easier hoops,” added Kanoff.
Candor would keep rolling to open the second with baskets from Rollins and Ray to cap the 17-0 run, before S-VE would answer with a score from Lilyanah Doolittle.
Rollins would find the net again in the quarter with a field goal and a free throw before a Makie 3-pointer capped Candor's scoring.
A late offensive putback by Trinity Dashler took the teams into the locker room at 25-8.
The Coyotes extended their lead with a 10-2 third frame with a basket from Megan Williamson, two free throws from Ray, and two 3-pointers from Makie.
Candor closed out the game on a 14-0 run that saw scoring start with a basket from Nicole Poli, included points from Rollins, Williamson, and Makie, and was capped by a putback by Malley Heidl.
Makie led all scorers with 19 and once again registered a double-double with 11 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.
Rollins scored 12, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and had four steals, while Hazel Ray also achieved a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with three assists, and Williamson scored seven points, pulled down six boards and had five steals.
Poli, who was being celebrated for Senior Night, pulled down seven rebounds, and Shawna Conklin and Malley Heidl each had four rebounds.
Doolittle led S-VE with eight points and three rebounds, while Root hauled down six boards, Faith Brenchley and Lauren Gillette each had four rebounds, and Kate Klym had five steals.
Candor (12-3, 7-2 IAC) hosts O-M Thursday night in its last regular-season home game, while S-VE (2-11) hosts Union Springs / Port Byron for its third game in three nights.
