YOUTH WRESTLING: OWEGO TRIO COMPETES IN STATE DUALS (2025-02-03)

WHITESBORO, N.Y. — A trio of Owego youth wrestlers competed in the New York State All-Section All-Star Duals here Jan. 4-5.

Gavin Lovell, and brothers Joey and Moose Monell represented Section IV at the event with Lovell and Joey Monell wrestling in the Middle School tournament, and Lovell and Moose Monell competing in the K6 tourney.

Lovell posted an 11-0 overall record. He competed at 96 and 92 pounds in Middle School and went 5-0 with pins in 38 and 26 seconds, 16-1 and 15-0 technical falls, and a 7-0 decision. In K6, he registered pins in 1:20 and 1:21, and also had a 21-4 tech fall, a 12-0 major decision and a 6-0 decision.

He would also be named to the Middle School and K6 all-tournament teams at 92 pounds.

Joey Monell was 2-3 at 80 pounds with a 17-3 major decision and a medical forfeit victory to his credit.

Moose Monell, wrestling at 64 pounds, was 3-3. His wins came via pins in 31 and 48 seconds, and a 14-2 major decision.

Also competing for the Section IV K6 team was Waverly’s Amelia Fiske at 130. She logged a 5-1 mark. Her wins came on pins in 41 seconds and in 1:29, by a 17-1 tech fall, and a pair of forfeits.

In the Middle School event, Section IV was fourth with a 2-3 record. The team defeated Section X, 60-16, and Section I, 53-28. It lost to Section III, 45-32, Section 2, 45-43, and Section V, 49-35.

In K6, the squad was 4-2 to place third. After falling to Section XI, 47-39, the team beat Section VI, 50-33, Section V Gold, 50-30, and Section III Silver, 64-30. Section IV would fall to eventual champion Section III Gold in the semifinals, 59-32, but defeat Section I for the bronze, 49-45.

In the All-Star Open, Newark Valley’s Monica Phillips claimed fourth-place honors in both the 10U 58 and 10U 61 divisions. Waverly’s Amelia Wright was the runner-up in 12U 117-125.

NOTE: Lovell competed in the National Youth Wrestling Duals in New Jersey this past weekend and finished with a 6-1 record.
