NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley created a little separation in the second half of a defensive battle here Friday, pulling out a 35-28 win over Watkins Glen in IAC Large School junior varsity girls basketball action.

Gabby James knocked down a 3-pointer, and scored five points in the first quarter to help the Cardinals to a 10-7 lead.

The Lake Hawks cut into the lead with a 6-5 scoring advantage in the second quarter, and trailed 15-13 at the half.

The Cardinals missed an opportunity for a larger halftime lead by making just 2 of 10 free throws in the first half.

James scored seven points in the third quarter, including her second trey of the game, to fuel a 12-8 spurt that put Newark Valley up 27-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

James scored four more points in the final stanza as NV closed out the win with an 8-7 scoring advantage.

James led the Cardinals with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while Peyton Rhodes had eight points and six boards

Sarah Lamb contributed two assists, two rebounds and four blocked shots in the win, while Bri Noble nabbed nine steals, and Natalie Wandell grabbed six rebounds.

Newark Valley returns to action Wednesday at Lansing.
