IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR RIDES FAST START TO 67-40 WIN OVER NEWFIELD (2025-01-30)

NEWFIELD — Candor took control right out of the gate, and never let up in a 67-40 win over Newfield here Thursday night in IAC South Small School Division girls basketball action.

The Coyotes took a quick 6-0 lead on lay-ups from Hazel Ray, Emmi Makie, and Megan Williamson.
 
After a Newfield timeout with Candor up 8-4, Candor closed out the opening stanza with an 11-0 run that included another layup from Ray, five points from Claire Rollins, and four more points from Makie, including a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to make it 19-4.

Candor’s offense did not let up in the second quarter, as it poured in 21 points from five different scorers.

Nicole Poli opened with a layup and was followed by back-to- back 3-pointers from Williamson and Makie to make it 27-4.

After Newfield rattled off eight straight points to close the gap to 27-12, the Coyotes answered with buckets from Williamson and Rollins, and another trey from Makie.

Hazel Ray added two free throws during the stretch, and Candor entered the half up 40-18.

Williamson and Makie canned 3-pointers in the third quarter, but Newfield had a 14-11 advantage in the quarter to close the gap to 51-32 entering the final eight minutes.

Candor finished strong, creating a 16-8 edge down the final stretch with the help of six different scorers. Williamson led the way with seven points, including her third bucket from behind the arc. The Coyotes got a bucket each from Malley Heidl, Rollins, Ray, Makie, and a free throw from Shawna Conklin.

Makie posted a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with five assists and four steals, while Williamson scored 17 points and dished out four assists, and
Rollins contributed nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

Ray registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with three steals, while Conklin pulled down 11 boards, and Nicole Poli added five rebounds.

Candor, now 10-3, travels to Section V Saturday for a non-league contest at Campbell-Savona.
