SECTION IV WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY CLOSES DUAL MEET SEASON WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN (2025-01-30)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley closed out the dual meet season with an impressive 43-22 victory over Corning in Section IV wrestling action on Senior Night here Thursday.

The Cardinals capitalized on a pair of pins and two technical falls as they won five contested bouts.They also received a trio of forfeit wins.

“We've been pretty banged up for a while, so between the injuries and sickness, as I said earlier in the year, it was kind of nice to have us finish off the season in a nice way,” said NV coach Eric D’Arcy.

“I know that we did not match up well with them, but our young guys have been stepping up all year long and they did again today, so that's a real positive.”

NV never trailed as Cadin Creeley returned from an injury to post a 16-1 technical fall in 4:49 at 160 pounds. He rode four takedowns to the win to give the home team a 5-0 lead.

The Hawks picked up a decision at 170 as Clayton Smith turned away Gabe Merrill, 4-3. The pair came into the bout ranked fourth in the section in Division I and Division II, respectively.

The Cardinals would then build a 23-3 cushion with forfeit wins by Titus Callahan (190), Jack Blomberg (215) and Austin DeBolt.

At 101, Corning’s Carter Soltis took an 8-7 edge into the third period and used a takedown and near fall to record a 15-7 major decision over Kenny Slater, making it a 23-7 score.

NV’s Jacob Shipman built a 10-0 lead over Ryan Teribury early in the second period and went on to win, 11-4, at 108.

Jesse Clark built a 7-0 advantage over Chance Spoonhower early in the second period at 116 and held him off for a 13-9 decision, making the match score 26-10.

Leland Houston (124) and Trevor Middendorf (131) pinned their opponents to push the NV cushion to 38-10 and seal up the Cardinals’ eight win in nine dual meets. Houston dispatched Arnav Deore in 2:14 and Middendorf decked Nicholas Woodcock in 1:43.

Logan Davis lost by fall to Corning’s Blake Teeter in 1:15 at 138 and Matt Mahon accepted a forfeit for the Hawks at 145, narrowing the gap to 38-22.

Marcos Escalante (152) showed off his footwork in the final scoring bout as he rode a trio of takedowns and two near falls to a 17-2 tech fall at the end of the first period.

There were five exhibition matches with Emmett Hendrickson and Houston registering first-period falls for NV.

Newark Valley, which was the top IAC Division II dual meet team and is coming off a recent championship at the IAC tournament, its first conference title since 2017,will head to Oneonta Feb. 8 for Qualifier A sectional competition.

“We're looking to carry some momentum into the class sectionals and the sectional meet, and hopefully have some good performances there too,” D’Arcy said.
