STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: BRAINARD SPARKS SECOND-HALF COMEBACK; OWEGO TOPS CV, 71-66 (2025-01-28)
Tioga County Sports ReportOWEGO — Owego trailed by 12 points at the half, but put together a big second half to rally for a 71-66 win over Chenango Valley here Tuesday night in STAC boys basketball action.
"A big comeback on Senior Night," said Owego Chris Evans.
"King Brainard had a tremendous performance off the bench, while Zack Bensley and Jack Buchsbaum came up big in the fourth quarter.
"Carter Rieg hit three timely 3-pointers, and (Matt) Higgins and (Joseph) Palladino also played outstanding defense down the stretch," added Evans.
The Warriors led 20-12 after the first quarter, and used a 14-10 advantage in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 34-22 at the half.
Kingston Brainard pumped in 11 points in the third quarter, while Jack Buchsbaum and Carter Rieg, who drained a 3-pointer, scored four points apiece in a 24-15 run that closed the gap to 49-46 entering the final eight minutes.
Zack Bensley scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter, while Matt Higgins and Rieg, who knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game, added four points apiece as Owego closed the game with a 25-17 run to pull out the win.
Brainard led the River Hawks with 15 points, while Buchsbaum scored 12 points, Rieg had 11 points, and Calvin Smith had nine points.
Bensley and Higgins added eight points apiece in the win, and Palladino chipped in with five points.
Warren Walters led CV with 24 points.
Owego, now 9-4, returns to action Friday at Norwich.
