IAC WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY PULLS OUT 36-35 WIN OVER ELMIRA (2025-01-17)

ELMIRA — It couldn't have been any closer, but Newark Valley pulled out a hard-fought, 36-35, decision over Elmira here Thursday night in non-league Section IV wrestling action.

The one-point difference in the match didn't come on the mats, however, as the Elmira coach was penalized a team point for arguing a call in the 152-pound match. Even without the deduction, the Cardinals would have won via tiebreaker criteria.

Newark Valley started the match strong with a technical fall win by 8th-grader Jacob Shipman at 108, with freshman Chance Spoonhower following that with a pin of Jackson Watson in 3:15 at 116 pounds to make it 11-0.

After senior Trevor Middendorf picked up NV's only forfeit at 124 pounds, the Express won consecutive bouts by fall, and picked up their only forfeit at 145 pounds to take an 18-17 lead.

In the match of the night, junior Marcos Escalante earned a hard-fought, 5-4, recision over Scott Fairbanks to give the Cardinals a 20-17 lead.

Elmira picked up a fall at 160 to take a 23-20 lead, but senior Gabe Merrill forged a 13-4 major decision over Liam Ogden at 170 to give the Cardinals a one-point lead, and junior Titus Callahan pinned Mason Mack in 2:52 at 190 pounds to make it 30-23.

After the Express closed the gap to 30-29 with a fall at 215, senior Austin DeBolt decked Josh Mitchell in 2:14 at 285 pounds to sew up the win.

Elmira scored a fall at 101 pounds to provide the final margin.
