Tioga County Sports ReportOWEGO — Owego shook off a slow start with a strong middle two quarters on its way to a 60-50 win over Chenango Forks here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.
"It was not a very aesthetically-pleasing game, but we managed to gut it out," said Owego coach Chris Evans.
"Calvin Smith hit some timely threes, (Kingston) Brainard was strong offensively off the bench, and (Joseph) Palladino is just a warrior.
"We still have a lot of work to do," added Evans.
The Blue Devils led 11-10 after the first eight minutes, but Jack Buchsbaum knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the second quarter, while Calvin Smith scored five pointes, including a trey, and Matt Higgins connected from behind the 3-point arc to fuel a 19-11 run that gave the River Hawks a 29-22 lead at the halftime intermission.
Smith drained another 3-pointer and scored five points in the third quarter, while Joseph Palladino and Kingston Brainard each hit a 3-pointer in a 16-12 spurt that put Owego up 45-34 heading into the final eight minutes.
Owego maintained its advantage throughout the fourth quarter.
Smith led Owego with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Buchsbaum scored 13 points, Brainard had nine points, Carter Rieg added six points, and Hunter Slater, Palladino, and Higgins chipped in with five points apiece.
Owego, now 6-4, hosts divisional rival Waverly Friday night.
