HS WRESTLING: SHORT-HANDED OWEGO COLLECTS FOUR 5TH-PLACE HONORS AT LUMBERJACK TOURNEY (2025-01-05)

Tioga County Sports Report
DEPOSIT — Owego left three of its top wrestlers at home, but managed to grab four fifth-place finishes at the Stan Elinsky Lumberjack Tournament here Saturday.

Freshmen Landon and Lucas Boccasini, and John Cornwell, and senior John Gilliland were the top finishers for the River Hawks, who competed without returning state qualifier Bobby Struble, Collin Monell and Dylan Brace, each coming into the new year with double digit victories to their credit.

Lucas Boccasini (190 pounds) won his final three bouts by pin while Cornwell and Gilliland each won their last two by fall to secure their placements.

Lucas Boccasini fell to Maine-Endwell’s Logan McGuire by fall in 2:47 and to Oxford/Greene’s Isaiah Sexton by pin in 3:20 to start the day. He turned it around by decking Ty Rynearson of Deposit/Hancock in three minutes flat, pinning Ayden Simpson from Newark Valley in 25 seconds, then dispatching David Dunkel of Oxford/Greene in 4:15 in the fifth-place match.

Cornwell (131) downed Luke Johnson of Rondout Valley in 2:23, but lost to Gabriel McNally of Pine Bush in 3:25, then fell by a 20-2 technical fall against Landyn Shaffer from Deposit/Hancock. Cornwell closed out his day with two second-period pins against NV’s Logan Davis in 2:40 and Lansing’s Junior Estep in 3:48.

Gilliland (145) opened with a pin of Rondout Valley’s Joseph Davies in 1:49, then lost to Gavin Marsit of Lansing in 1:43 before dropping a 6-2 decision to Marcos Escalante from Newark Valley. Gilliland bounced back to pin Corbin Daugherty of Oxford/Greene in 2:44, then pinned teammate Jayce Saulsbury (no time recorded).

Landon Boccasini (108) suffered a fall to M-E’s Larry Tull in 3:04 and by a 6-4 decision against Mason Reed of Oxford/Greene before decking Ben Shaw from Deposit/-Hancock in 1:21. He lost to Caden Higley of Sidney by technical fall, 15-0, and lost by injury default to Tioga’s Parker Jackson in his final match.

Jayce Saulsbury (145) and Trevor Monell (215) were sixth. Saulsbury went 1-3 with a pin and Monell was 2-2 with two falls.

Anthony Neumuth (285) went 1-4 to place seventh. Logan Rose (124) was 1-4 with a pin and Jaydin Brained went 2-3 with a pair of falls, both placing eighth. Gabriel Zervos (131) took ninth, going 3-2 with two pins and a tech fall. Marcus Brainard (116) was 11th, going 0-4.

Maine-Endwell dominated the 13-team event with 247.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Deposit/Hancock (191) by more than 50 points. Owego was 10th with 68, but probably would have challenged for a top three spot with its regular lineup.

The River Hawks visit Chenango Forks Thursday for a STAC Central clash, then host the second annual River Hawk Round Robin Saturday.
