HS WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY’S CALLAHAN CAPTURES LUMBERJACK TITLE; CARDINALS FINISH THIRD (2025-01-05)

DEPOSIT — Newark Valley’s Titus Callahan recorded two first-period pins and added a pair of one-point victories to capture the 190-pound championship at the Stan Elinsky Lumberjack Tournament here Saturday.

A returning state qualifier at 190, the NV junior decked David Dunkel of Oxford/Greene in 1:29 and teammate Emmit Hendrickson in 1:09. He followed those win up by pulling out a pair of 8-7 thrillers against Maine-Endwell’s Kazio Jellick and Logan McGuire to improve to 20-5 on the season.

The Cardinals' Logan Rhodes (138) and Marcos Escalante (145) came away with runner-up efforts.

Rhodes pinned Colin Morlando from Oxford/Greene in 1:52, then rolled to a trio of technical falls. He won 20-4 over Logan Milk of Sullivan West, and won by 18-3 verdicts against M-E’s Liam McQuade and Oxford/Greene’s Troy Braman. In the championship bout, he met returning state qualifier Owen Clark of Lansing and suffered a pin in 53 seconds.

Escalante dispatched Vincent Moore of Deposit/Hancock in 1:15, then posted a 17-1 techfall over Eldred’s Luke Potter. He battled past Owego’s Jonathon Gilliland, 6-2, and registered a 13-2 major decision against Jackson Barcone of Rondout Valley. In the finals, he faced the host Lumberjacks’ Asaac Mead and dropped a 9-3 decision. Mead, a returning Section IV Division II place-winner, won his 100th career match in the semifinals.

Logan Woodin placed third at 160. He won by fall over Hutch Hutchins of Rondout Valley in four minutes flat, then took out Walter Henry from Sullivan West in 3:20. He added a 17-1 tech fall over Maddox Mouangkhoua of Pine Bush, but fell to Lucas Barnes of Deposit/Hancock by pin in 3:08. Woodin rebounded to outscore Yadier Richard of Johnson City, 10-6, in the consolation finals.

Jack Blomberg took fourth at 215. He pinned Paul Bueti of Pine Bush in 1:35, then chalked up a 13-2 major decision over Owego’s Trevor Monell. He lost to M-E’s Griffin McQuade by fall in 1:07 and fell to Justin Stewart from Pine Bush, 8-5, in the third-place match.

Andrew Lelik (101) and Chance Spoonhower (116) contributed fifth-place finishes. Lelik was 2-3 with a pin and a decision, and Spoonhower went 3-2 with a pin, major decision and decision to his credit.

Taking sixth was Leland Houston at 124. He was 2-3 with a pin and a decision.

Coming in seventh were Jacob Shipman (116), Logan Davis (124) and Hendrickson (190). Shipman went 2-2 with a 51-second fall and a major decision. Davis was 2-2 and racked up a pair of tech falls. Hendrickson was 1-3 with a win by pin.

Ajay Tuttle (131) placed eighth. He was 1-4 with a pin.

Also competing for the Cardinals was Ayden Simpson at 190.

M-E won the team title with 247.5 points and Deposit/Hancock was second with 191. NV scored 117.5 to edge out Lansing by one point for third in the 13-team tournament.

The Cardinals were without a few wrestlers, including unbeaten Trevor Middendorf, returning state qualifier Cadin Creeley and heavyweight Austin DeBolt.

Newark Valley (3-0, 1-0 IAC Division I) returns to dual meet action Wednesday to host rival Tioga (2-0, 1-0 IAC Division I) at 6 p.m.
