IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RIDES STRONG SECOND HALF TO 48-30 WIN OVER LANSING (2025-01-03)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley used a strong third quarter to pull away for a 48-30 win over Lansing here Friday night in IAC Large School girls basketball crossover action.

“After a sloppy first half, I was pleased with our second-half performance," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.

"We played much better defense, which led to better offense," he noted.

"We had a cold shooting night as a team, so Aubrey Kwiatkowski dropping 20 points was a big difference-maker," added Schweiger.

Kam Short scored five points, including an old-fashion three-point play, and Haven Aylesworth knocked down a 3-pointer for the Cardinals, but the Bobcats played them even, at 11-11, in the opening stanza.

Aubrey Kwiatkowski canned a pair of 3-pointers, and Kam Short added four points as the Cardinals used a 12-9 advantage in the stanza to take a 23-20 lead at the halftime intermission.

Kwiatkowski scored nine points, including her second 3-pointer, to fuel a 12-2 third-quarter blitz that put Newark Valley up 35-22 entering the final eight minutes.

Kwiatkowski drained another 3-pointer and scored five points in the fourth quarter, and Anika Smith also knocked down a trey in 13-8 game-closing run for the Cardinals.

Kwiatkowski led Newark Valley with 20 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, six rebounds, three assists, and five steals, while Kam Short had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and six blocked shots, and Adriana Finta added six points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Livia Short chipped in with four points and seven rebounds, while Smith had four rebounds, six steals, and one blocked shot, Adrianna Rich pulled down eight boards and had four steals, and Aylesworth hauled down eight rebounds.

Marissa Nolan led Lansing with 16 points.

Newark Valley, now 6-3, returns to action Tuesday at Notre Dame.
