IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: MAKIE'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE POWERS CANDOR TO HARD-FOUGHT, 51-43, WIN OVER MARATHON (2025-01-03)

Tioga County Sports Report
MARATHON — Candor used a 9-0 run early in the second half to open up a double-digit lead on its way to a 51-43 win over Marathon here Friday night in a physical IAC Small School girls basketball crossover battle.

"It was another great 'team' game for us," said Candor coach Carl Kanoff. "Everybody did something that helped us come away with the win.

"The girls showed tremendous heart and put up great fights for rebounds and loose balls," he noted. "They hit numerous clutch shots that continued momentum or ensured our lead.

"We knew that being without Nicola (Soper), rebounding would be key - and three girls finished in double-digits and another had seven," added Kanoff. "They show outstanding fight and desire."

The Coyotes dealt with foul trouble for most of the game and were without leading rebounder Nicola Soper.

The Olympians led 7-5 after the opening quarter, but a resurgent Coyote squad threw in 15 second-quarter points to take a 20-14 lead into the half.

Marathon would strike first coming out of the locker room, cutting their deficit to four, but the Coyotes responded with a nine-point run that included a Megan Williamson 3-pointer sandwiched between two fast-break layups from Claire Rollins.

Hazel Ray finished the run with a hard-earned basket underneath, pushing the Candor lead to 29-16. Emmi Makie scored the remaining seven points of the quarter for the Coyotes as they entered the final frame up 36-28.

Marathon would open the fourth quarter with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 4:13 remaining.

Coming out of a Candor timeout, Makie hit a jumper from the key to regain the lead.

The teams traded possessions until Marathon once again was able to tie the game, but Makie quickly answered with another bucket that would put Candor ahead to stay, at 44-42.

The Olympians would manage only a free throw the rest of the way, while Makie finished the quarter with eight points.

Makie ended the game with a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while Williamson scored 10 points, and Ray scored 9 points and hauled down 11 boards.

Malley Heidl had six points on two 3-pointers and had seven rebounds, while Rollins scored five points to go with three rebounds and three steals, Shawna Conklin hpulled down 10 rebounds, and blocked three shots, and Ava Fernando had three rebounds and two steals.

Marathon's Addison Oram led all scorers with 30 points.

Candor (5-1 overall, 3-0 IAC) visits division rival Spencer-VanEtten on Tuesday.
