Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Watkins Glen had a strong second half to pull away for a 65-45 win over Newark Valley here Friday night in IAC South Large School Division boys basketball action.
The Lake Hawks jumped out to a 19-12 first-quarter lead, despite seven points by Newark Valley's Anthony Dougher.
Tim Wojtysiak canned a pair 3-pointers in the second quarter, Dougher added an old-fashion three-point play, and Ashton Slavik drained a 3-pointer to help the Cardinals to a 16-14 advantage in the stanza that closed the gap to 33-28 at the half.
Wojytsiak knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and Slavik added a trey in the third quarter, but the Lake Hawks outscored the Cardinals 14-9 to take a 47-37 lead into the final eight minutes.
Watkins Glen closed the game with an 18-8 run to seal the win.
Wojtysiak led NV with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, while Dougher scored 15 points, Slavik added six points and Austin Green chipped in with five points.
Jude Santos led Watkins Glen with 21 points, while Sam Carlin and Caleb Bressett added 10 points apiece.
Newark Valley, now 2-3, returns to action Jan. 3 at Lansing.
