Tioga County Sports ReportOWEGO — Oneonta took the lead in the final 40 seconds after a back-and-forth fourth quarter, and held on in a frenetic ending for a 48-47 win here Wednesday night in STAC boys basketball action.
The River Hawks led throughout the first half as Calvin Smith knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points, and Joseph Palladino added four points in a 13-8 run to start the game.
Zack Bensley scored four points in the first quarter, and Jack Buchsbaum canned a 3-pointer, but Oneonta trimmed one point off the deficit, and trailed 20-16 at the half.
Bensley scored four more points in the third quarter, and four of his teammates also found the scoring column, but the Yellowjackets outscored Owego, 16-13, in the stanza to pull within one point, at 33-32, heading into the final eight points.
The teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter with Bensley scored a pair of buckets, Buchsbaum connecting on a 3-pointer, and Duke Snyder and Matt Higgins both converting old-fashioned three-point plays.
Oneonta scored to take a 48-47 lead with 38 seconds remaining in the game.
After getting a defensive stop, Oneonta was sent to the line with 7 seconds remaining, but missed both free-throw attempts.
Owego rushed the ball up the floor, but a potential game-winner was off-the-mark as time expired.
Bensley led Owego with 12 points, while Buchsbaum scored nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Palladino and Smith added seven points apiece, and Matt Higgins chipped in with five points.
Brady Carr and Britten Zen led Oneonta with 13 points apiece, and Maddox Imperato added nine points.
Owego, now 3-2, hosts Seton Catholic Friday.
