IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR ROLLS OVER NEWFIELD, 74-39, IN DIVISION OPENER (2024-12-17)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Candor used a big second-quarter run to open divisional play with an impressive, 74-39, win over Newfield here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School girls basketball action.

"I'm very pleased with our offensive production so far this season," said Candor coach Carl Kanoff. "We're taking good shots and making good decisions when running our half-court sets.

"The girls are also running the floor pretty well in transition and getting buckets on breaks," he noted. "We actually missed a ton of layups and shots at the block tonight, so there's actually room for growth, believe it or not.

"This was a big division win for us to get off on the right foot," added Kanoff. "I'm very proud of everyone's effort tonight."

The Coyotes, now 3-1, raced out to a four-point lead that was countered by an 8-0 Newfield run. After a timeout, Candor responded with a 7-0 run of its own, on baskets from Claire Rollins, Nicola Soper, and Emmi Makie.

Candor led 21-15 after the first eight minutes.

The second quarter was all Coyotes as they pumped in another 20 points, led by 12 from Rollins  on three field goals, a 3-pointer, and a traditional three-point play. Candor entered the half up 41-22.

Candor was only able to tack on a point to its lead in the third quarter. Nicola Soper scored five points, and Megan Williamson added four points in a 13-12 quarter that pushed the Coyote lead to 54-34.

Candor pulled further away down the stretch with a 19-4 run that included two 3-pointers each from Malley Heidl and Makie.

The Coyotes' balanced scoring attack featured four players in double-digits. Makie had 18 points, including four 3-pointers, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while Rollins had 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and three steals, and Soper had 12 points, a whopping 29 rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shot.

Megan Williamson had 10 points, three boards, and three assists in the win, while Shawna Conklin scored a career-high eight points to go with six rebounds, Heidl finished with six points, and Hazel Ray pulled down 10 rebounds.

Egypt Smith-Henderson led Newfield with a game-high 20 points.

Candor's three-game winning streak marks the best start for the Coyotes since 2017 when they started 4-0.

Next up for the Coyotes is a tough task as they host defending Class C State Champions Moravia (4-1) on Friday. Moravia won their last meeting 70-20 in the IAC Small School Championship game last season.
