HS WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY’S MIDDENDORF WINS DAVE BUCK TITLE; HOUSTON WINS U-E JV TOURNEY (17 PHOTOS) (2024-12-14)

ELMIRA — Newark Valley’s Trevor Middendorf recorded his second tournament victory of the season, winning the Dave Buck Memorial at Elmira Saturday. Meanwhile, Leland Houston led the Cardinals at the U-E Tradesmen Tournament, pinning all four of his opponents.
Middendorf captured the 124-pound title with four victories, including three technical falls. He made quick work of Blaine Haney from Marcellus, 19-4 in 1:44, and Clayton Wells of Moravia, 20-5 in 1:08. The semifinals brought a tough foe in Waverly’s Drayton Dekay, but Middendorf took advantage of three takedowns to post a 10-5 decision. The championship bout brought a 20-4 tech fall over Schuyler’s Lucas Hoffman at the buzzer. Middendorf beat Hoffman, 7-2, to win the Larry Goodrich Invitational last week.
Logan Woodin and Cadin Creeley placed second and third, respectively, at 160 while Gabe Merrill was third at 170 and Titus Callahan was third at 190. Woodin and Creeley both suffered losses to Waverly standout Cooper Robinson while Merrill and Callahan’s setbacks came against eventual champions as well.
Woodin won by tech fall over Josh Johnson of Elmira, 17-2 in 1:14, then pinned Brayden Walton of Horseheads in 1:04 and Griffin Conrad from Ithaca in 1:09. He added another tech fall in the semis, 15-0 in two minutes over Waverly’s Riley Pipher. He lost by fall to Robinson in 4:02.
Creeley decked Riley Sullivan of Marcellus in 2:30, Balan Ault from Schuyler in 37 seconds and Windsor’s Mason Colgan in 3:02. He dropped an 11-1 major decision to Robinson in the semis, but bounced back with a 19-3 tech fall in 2:13 against Pipher.
Merrill dispatched Parker Larson of Waverly in 1:45, Mason Mack of Elmira in 3:50 and James Tousley from Horseheads in 26 seconds. He lost by fall to Mathew Boyce of Windsor in 3:52, but came back with a fall over Chenango Forks’ Brayden Wildey in 5:45.
Callahan opened with a fall over Ithaca’s Owen Webster in 1:57, then decked Joey Chamberlin of Schuyler in 34 seconds. He suffered a pin against Elliott Barbosa of Marcellus in 1:11 in the semis, but registered a 13-1 major decision over Evan Trusdale of Chenango Forks for third.
Logan Rhodes went 3-2 at 145 to place fifth. He scored a 16-0 tech fall in 2:53 over Ernie Estlinbaum of Marcellus before dropping his next two bouts. He lost a 15-2 major decision to returning state qualifier Tim Boyce of Windsor, the eventual champ, and dropped a 19-1 tech fall in 3:43 against third-place finisher Max Collins of Elmira. Rhodes recovered with a 15-0 tech fall in four minutes over Grant MacRabie of Chenango Forks, then prevailed in sudden victory against Central Square’s Richard Pontello, 14-11.
Austin Debolt finished FIFTH at 285. He went the distance with defending state champion Troy Beeman of Waverly in his opener, falling by a 7-0 score. He also lost his second bout to Schuyler’s Dana Guild by pin in 1:12. He scored a pair of pins in 28 and 62 seconds, respectively, against Elmira’s Rashid Driscoll and Ithaca’s Germain Harris. He won an excitig a 2-1 decision over Windsor’s Luke Beattie in the fifth-place match.
Kenny Slater (101) and Jack Blomberg (215) both placed seventh. Slater was 1-4 with a tech fall victory and Blomberg went 2-3 with a pair of falls to his credit.
Emmit Hendrickson took 10th at 190, going 1-4 with his win by pin. Michael Wandell was 11th at 138, going 1-3 with a win by fall.
The Cardinals were sixth in the 12-team tournament with 118.5 points. Marcellus (225) and Central Square (202) from Section III claimed the top two spots, followed by Windsor (192.5), Waverly (170.5) and Elmira (142.5).
NV (2-0) holds its first home dual meet Wednesday against Trumansburg (1-0) in an IAC crossover.
U-E Tradesmen JV TournamentHouston brought home an individual title for Newark Valley, going 4-0 with four pins at 131 pounds. He spent less than seven minutes on the mat.
Logan Davis (131) was third with a pair of falls and Andrew Lelik (101) was fourth. Lelik recorded the quick pin of the day — six seconds.
Jacob Shipman and Chance Spoonhower placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at 116. Shipman recorded two tech falls and Spoonhower registered a pair of pins.
Ajay Tuttle (138) and Wyatt Dillow (215) both took ninth, Camden King (152) was 11th, Brennan Decker (160) was 12th and Ayden Shipman (215) was 14th.
Maine-Endwell won the team championship with 301.5 points, outdistancing the next closest team by more than 100 points. NV was 10th in the 13-team event with 80 points.
