IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: DEFENSE KEYS FAST START IN NEWARK VALLEY'S 66-23 WIN OVER DRYDEN (24 PHOTOS) (2024-12-13)
Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley scored the first 15 points of the game, and stretched its lead to 35 points early in the third quarter on its way to a 66-23 win over Dryden here Friday night in IAC Large School girls basketball crossover action.
“I am very pleased with our defensive effort tonight," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "The girls played really hard.
"And, the two Adrianna’s (Finta and Rich) led a very well-balanced scoring attack," he added.
Adrianna Finta scored six points in the first quarter, while Aubrey Kwiatkowski scored four, and Adriana Rick knocked down a 3-pointer as the Cardinals raced out to a 15-0 lead.
Dryden scored with 7 seconds remaining in the first quarter, but Haven Aylesworth scored a bucket and Anika Smith hit two free throws to make it 19-2 less than a minute into the second quarter.
Dryden scored four points in 37 seconds to make it 23-6, but the Cardinals closed out the final 5:29 of the first half with a 13-0 run to take a 36-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
Finta scored seven points in the quarter, while Smith added five, and Kwiatkowski canned a 3-pointer. Finta and Smith also connected from behind the arc.
Newark Valley also scored the first five points of the third quarter to stretch its lead to 41-6.
Liv Short scored six points in the third quarter, and Rich added five, including a 3-pointer, in a 16-8 run that gave Newark Valley a 52-14 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Finta led Newark Valley with 15 points, four rebounds, eight assists, six steals, and one blocked shot, while Rich had 12 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, and Kwiatkowski had nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot.
Liv Short had eight points, five rebounds, five steals, and one blocked shot in the win, while Smith had seven points and three steals, Kam Short had four points, eight rebounds, and six blocked shots, and Malloy Chapman and Aylesworth added four points apiece.
Gianna Pascarella led Dryden with 15 points.
Newark Valley, now 3-1, returns to action Tuesday at Thomas A. Edison.
