SPENCER — Spencer-Van Etten/Candor held its first-ever girls wrestling meet Tuesday, and although the Eagles came up short in the team scoring they did win six of the 10 contested matches.
SVEC fell to Chenango Forks, 20-19, giving up a trio of forfeits while receiving just one. In a 30-14 loss to Waverly, the Eagles forfeited four weights.
This is the first season in which New York’s female wrestlers will compete for sanctioned individual championships, so the team results don’t mean as much as individual efforts in the long run.
“I'm super excited,” said coach Nick Petrie. “We got to get a match for our girls here at home, but it's just quite amazing for girls wrestling as a whole. To see everybody out here.
“Been to a few events now and I'm excited for them to have an actual certified states this year and anything else that's going on, but as far as our girls and how they're wrestling, I'm thoroughly impressed. We're paying attention, we're learning, we're getting the most out of it. Even when we're losing, they come over and usually tell us before we tell them what they noticed they had to do differently, so that's exciting to see. It makes me feel good as a coach.”
Defending Section IV champion Tayah Beach bounced back from a rough season-opening performance to record a pair of first-period technical falls, including one in just 25 seconds. Teammate Dallas Bohling racked up a pair of first-period pins.
Bohling upped her record to 5-1 while Beach improved to 4-2. Another SVEC veteran, Katelynn VanEtten, also moved to 5-1 with a fall and a forfeit.
“They tend to beat each other up pretty well in practice,” Petrie said of Beach and Bohling. “It was good to see Tayah bounce back. We tried to hopefully see if we could get that match back, but just based on where everybody was sitting today, we couldn't see that rematch again. The coach was referring to Beach’s loss to Waverly’s Emma Vanderhoof at the Larry Goodrich Girls Invitational Friday.
“Dallas has been putting in the work all summer long and it really shows,” Petrie added. “I feel like she's got at least a season, season-and-a-half ahead of where she had been, and that's good to see as a coach.”
With the sanction as a legitimate championship sport came the change from the traditional folkstyle wrestling seen in boys matches to freestyle.
“At first I thought it was going to be, I guess, a negative,” Petrie said. “The more I watch it, it seems like a positive because as much as the scoring is different, there's a lot of things that carry right over. And it allows them to maybe wrestle in certain positions that other girls haven't seen yet or haven't gotten experience in, despite the scoring being a little different, so I really don't think it's a handicap. I think it's a great benefit to them, actually.”

Bohling (114 pounds) and Taylor Zufall decked their opponents in 52 and 45 seconds, respectively, then Beach (126) took her foe to the mat, secured a leg lace and continuously rolled the Blue Devil grappler for the tech.
The 14-0 advantage wouldn’t be enough as Forks retaliated with a pin and three forfeits to make it 20-14, and VanEtten’s forfeit only secured another five points for the home team.
WAVERLY 30, SVEC 14
The Wolverines got the early edge with a forfeit and pin while SVEC got a pin from Bohling and a tech fall from Beach.
Waverly added a tech fall and three consecutive forfeits to make it 30-9, then VanEtten closed out the night with a quick pin.
SVEC will compete in the U-E Journeyman Tournament Friday at Union-Endicott.
