IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR DROPS SEASON-OPENER AT T-BURG, 54-50 (2024-12-09)

Tioga County Sports Report
TRUMANSBURG — Candor led by as many as five points in the third quarter, but Trumansburg rallied to pull out a season-opening, 54-50,  win here Monday night in IAC Small School crossover girls basketball action.

The Coyotes started strong, with 10 points from Emmi Makie helping them to an 11-7 lead.

In the second quarter, turnovers proved costly for Candor as the Blue Raiders tossed in 20 points, mostly off Coyote miscues, to take a 27-23 lead into halftime.

Claire Rollins scored eight to keep Candor close.

The Coyotes took charge early in the second half, overcoming the deficit and running their lead to five.

Rollins opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Megan Williamson hit another 3, after layups from Makie and Hazel Ray.

Candor would watch their lead evaporate, however, as Trumanburg hit two 3-pointer to close out the quarter, and take a 40-35 lead into the final eight minutes.

Candor received scoring from six players in a hard-fought final stanza. Four points each from Ray and Malley Heidl were complimented by a bucket each from Makie, Williamson, Nicola Soper and a free throw from Rollins, but Trumansburg matched them nearly point-for-point.

Candor was 7-for-15 from the free-throw line in the contest, while Trumansburg shot 10-for-16.

Rollins led Candor with a double-double — 14 points and 10 steals, while Makie had 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Heidl had six points and eight rebounds.

Hazel Ray had six points and four steals for the Coyotes, while Soper had five points and seven rebounds, Williamson added five points, and Shawna Conklin pulled down six rebounds.

Candor returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Notre Dame.
