STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: OWEGO COOLS OFF AFTER HOT START; FALLS TO ELMIRA IN SIBLEY TOURNEY FINALS (2024-12-07)
Tioga County Sports ReportOWEGO — Owego got off to a fast start, but cooled off after the first quarter as Elmira used a strong second half to pull out a 60-48 win here Saturday night in the finals of the Charlie Sibley Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament.
The River Hawks used balanced scoring in the first eight minutes, with Calvin Smith and Kingston Brainard each scoring five points, including a 3-pointer, with Jack Buchsbaum adding five points, including an old-fashioned three-point play, and Duke Snyder and Joseph Palladino each connecting from behind the three-point arc to help them to a 23-19 lead.
The Express outscored Owego, 10-9, in the second quarter to close the gap to 32-29 at the half.
James Harris knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and scored eight points in the third quarter to spark Elmira in a 19-11 run that gave the Express a 48-43 lead heading into he final eight minutes.
The Express made 6 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter, and limited the River Hawks to five points to seal the win.
Brainard led a balanced Owego offense with 12 points, while Smith scored 10, Buchsbaum aded seven points, and Zack Bensley, Palladino, and Snyder chipped in with five points apiece.
Harris led Elmira with 21 points, and Zyquis Matias added 14 points.
Owego, now 1-1, returns to action Thursday at Chenango Forks.
