HS WRESTLING: MIDDENDORF WINS TO LEAD NEWARK VALLEY AT GOODRICH INVITE (2024-12-08)

NEWARK VALLEY — Trevor Middendorf went 4-0 and gained a measure of revenge against an IAC nemesis to capture the 124-pound championship at the Larry Goodrich Memorial Invitational here Saturday.
The Newark Valley senior defeated Schuyler’s Lucas Hoffman, 7-2, to take the title. Hoffman defeated Middendorf both times the pair met last season, topping him in the IAC and Section IV Division II semifinal rounds.
Middendorf also scored a 17-2 technical fall over Gavin Worden of Central Valley Academy, and pinned Rashad Allen of Cortland in 21 seconds and Rasheed Scott from Binghamton in 1:12.
His effort helped the Cardinals to a third-place finish in the team challenge. NV scored 177 points, trailing only Rush-Henrietta (242.5) and Unadilla Valley/Unatego/Franklin (191) while edging out Tioga County rival Owego (172.5) in the 13-team event.
Claiming third was Logan Woodin at 160 with a 3-1 mark. He decked Goshen’s Ethan Tetzlaff in 52 seconds Elmira’s Scott Fairbanks in 2:54 and teammate Cadin Creeley in 2:30. Woodin fell to Rush’s Jackson Koppers, the eventual champ, by fall in 1:42.
Logan Rhodes (145), Creeley, Titus Callahan (190) and Austin DeBolt (285) placed fourth for Newark Valley.
Rhodes went 4-2 with four pins to his credit. Creeley was 3-2 with a trio of falls. Callahan was also 3-2, pinning two foes and scoring a 19-4 tech fall against another. DeBolt was 2-2 on the day and both of his wins were by fall.
Gabe Merrill was fifth at 170 with a 3-1 record with two tech falls and a major decision.
Andrew Lelik (108), Jacob Sherman (116) and Marcos Escalante (152) finished sixth. Escalante went 3-2, Shipman was 2-3 and Lelik was 0-3.
Kenny Slater took seventh at 101 with a 3-2 record and Chance Spoonhower (116) was eighth at 1-4.
Also competing for the Cardinals were Leland Houston (131), Michael Wandell (138), Elijah Williams (170), Emmit Hendrickson (190) and Jack Blomberg (215).
Newark Valley (1-0) travels to Marathon Wednesday for an IAC dual meet.
