IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RIDES FAST START TO 52-36 WIN OVER WINDSOR IN DRAGO TOURNEY CONSOLATION GAME (2024-12-07)
Tioga County Sports ReportONEONTA — Newark Valley rode a fast start to a 52-36 win over Windsor here Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Drago Girls Basketball Tournament.
"We got off to a fast start, but got a little passive in the second quarter," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"I thought the team responded well to the coaching they received at halftime, and played much better in the second half," he noted.
"Everyone played and contributed," added Schweiger. "We had three kids — Haven Aylesworth, Malloy Chapman, and Cece Whitney — score the first varsity points, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski tied a career-high in points."
Aubrey Kwiatkoski knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the first quarter, and Adrianna Finta added six points to fuel a 20-4 blitz in the opening eight minutes.
Windsor outscored the Cardinals 9-6 in the second quarter to close the gap to 26-13 at the half, but Newark Valley answered in the third quarter.
Kwiatkowski, who canned her third trey of the game, Finta, and Kam Short each scored four points in the third quarter, and Adriana Rich drilled a 3-pointer as the Cardinals used a 17-13 spurt to take a 42-26 lead into the final eight minutes.
Kwiatkowski scored six more points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals sealed the win.
Kwiatkowski led Newark Valley with 20 points and four steals, while Finta, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 12 points, eight rebounds, and five steals, and Rich had five points, three rebonds, and three steals.
Kam Short had four points, seven boards, and nine blocked shots in the win, while Liv Short had four points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots, Haven Aylesworth added four rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot, and Anika Smith chipped in with three assists, and one blocked shot.
Sonya Knapp led Windsor with 12 points.
Newark Valley, now 1-1, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Cortland.
