OWEGO — Owego ran Elmira ragged in the first half, and led by four at the intermission, but the second half was all about the Express' post play.

Behind 49 points — 26 in the second half — from 6-11 freshman Maya Smith and 5-11 sophomore Mariah Matias, Elmira rallied for a 62-55 win here Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the annual Charle Sibley Memorial Tournament.

Madison McEvoy scored six points in the first quarter, and Ashlyn Dalton and Lexi Herceg each scored four in a fast-paced first eight minutes that saw the River Hawks take an 18-17 lead.

McEvoy, Herceg, and Kylie Grippen each scored four points in the second quarter to help Owego to a 15-12 advantage, and a 33-29 lead at the half.

Smith scored 13 points, and Matias had 10 in the first half to keep the Express in the game. Zhamir Harris also had a pair of 3-pointers.

In the third quarter, Smith scored nine points, Matias had five, and Ashy Wallace added four as the Express used a 20-11 run to erase the deficit, and take a 49-44 lead into the final eight minutes.

Jenna McEvoy, with six points, and Madison McEvoy kept the River Hawks in the contest, scoring all of the team's points in the third quarter.

Smith and Matias combined to score 12 points in the final eight minutes, and the Express made 6 of 8 free-throw attempts to preserve the win.

Madison McEvoy led Owego with 16 points, four steals, and three assists, while Herceg had 15 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and Jenna McEvoy added eight points.

Eva Crawford added six point and seven rebounds for the River Hawks, while Ashlyn Dalton had four points, five assists, and four steals, and Kylie Grippen added three steals.

Smith led the Express with 29 points, while Matias scored 20, Harris added six points, and Wallace chipped in with five.

NOTE: Madison McEvoy was named to the all-tournament team.

Owego, now 1-1, hosts Chenango Forks Tuesday.
