HS GIRLS WRESTLING: VanETTEN LEADS SVEC EFFORT AT NEWARK VALLEY TOURNAMENT (2024-12-06)

NEWARK VALLEY — Katelynn VanEtten pinned her first two opponents in a combined 35 seconds on the way to a third-place showing at the Larry Goodrich Girls Invitational here Friday.

VanEtten, competing at 235 pounds, decked Savannah Savercool of Waverly in 19 seconds, then upstaged that fall with a 16-second pin of Elmira’s Izmarieah Rivers-Morgan in the second round.

In the championship bracket, she would suffer a pin against Groton’s Leontine Evans in 1:31, but received a forfeit over Mackenzee Davis of Elmira to claim third.

Dallas Bohling took fifth at 114 for the Eagles. She dumped Caitlyn Thompson from Oneonta in 26 seconds to open the tourney, but lost a 10-0 technical fall to eventual champion Madalyn Hill of Shenendehowa in the next round.

In consolation bracket action, Bohling pinned Ahraya Whitt of Oxford/Greene in 1:34), then dispatched Serenity Rollins of Elmira in 46 seconds to claim fifth place.

Abigail Russell placed eighth at 132. She lost to a pair of Shenendehowa grapplers to start off, by 10-0 tech fall to Kaitlyn Young and by pin to Melanie Collett in 56 seconds. Russell fell to Schuyler’s Jackie Mace by an 11-0 tech fall, then pinned Waverly’s Faith Hyjek in 3:45. She lost to Kassandra Lindsay of Dryden by 10-0 tech fall in the seventh-place match.

Tayah Beach placed ninth at 120. She lost to eventual champion Makenzie Harbour of Shenendehowa by a 12-1 tech fall and by pin to Emma Vanderhoof of Waverly in 2:24. Beach had a momentary scare in the latter bout, suffering an injury to her lower back, but was able to continue.

She capped her outing with a pair of big victories, pinning Elmira’s Callie Comfort in 45 seconds in her consolation bracket opener, then registered a 10-0 tech fall over Onnah Thompson of Waverly in the placement round.

Taylor Zufall overcame two early setbacks, winning her final three bouts to finish 13th. She dropped her first match to Michaela Daly of Owego, 6-2, then lost by 13-3 tech fall to Sydney Rosenbloom from Waverly.

Zufall rebounded with a thrilling 9-8 decision over Bailey Lockskin of Shenendehowa, then pinned Shen’s Amanda Skiba in 2:10. She ended her tournament with a fall over Tioga’s Alyson Chamberlain in 1:01.

The Eagles' team of five took eighth in the 18-team event with 108.5 points. Shen, with 20 competitors, won the team title with 368.5.

The SVEC girls are scheduled to host Waverly and Chenango Forks in a triangular Tuesday.
