NEW YORK STATE VOLLEYBALL: OWEGO SWEEPS MASSENA IN CLASS A QUARTERFINALS; ADVANCES TO SEMI-FINAL POOL PLAY (19 PHOTOS) (2024-11-16)
Tioga County Sports ReportMASSENA, N.Y. — After a six-year absence, Owego will return to New York State semi-final pool play by virtue of its sweep of Section X champs Massena here Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Class A Volleyball Championships.
The River Hawks, now 19-0, will return to action Friday at 2 p.m. at the Glens Falls Civic Center. They were state champs in 2013, '15, and '17, and runners-up in 2016 and '18.
"It’s exciting to be able to go back to Glens Falls and be considered part of the Final Four in Class A," said Owego coach Abbey Manning.
"We are going to be seeing great competition this upcoming weekend, but it’s exciting to be apart of something so special with an amazing group of girls," added Manning.
Owego topped Massena by scores of 25-9, 25-14, and 25-14.
"These girls gave it their all this match," said Manning. "You can tell they wanted it more than ever this year.
"Our serve-receive really helped our offensive scheme," she added.
Maggie Hamed led Owego with five service aces, 15 kills, and one block, while Lexi Herceg led the River Hawk attack with 30 setter assists, and Michaela Terry registered seven kills and one block.
Shannon Maslin recorded 14 digs in the win, while Sofia Silvanic and Kayla Newman each had eight digs, Logan Georgia added six kills, and Evelyn Howe chipped in with four kills.
