NYSPHSAA CROSS COUNTRY: CHRYSLER TAKES 41ST TO LEAD OWEGO GIRLS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3 BOYS FINISH IN TOP 100 (11 PHOTOS) (2024-11-16)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportQUEENSBURY — The Owego girls got a 41st place finish from Jaelyn Chrysler as they finished 10th at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Running in the Class B race, Owego finished with a team score of 241. Tappan Zee won at 65 points.
Chrysler led Owego with a 41st place finish in 19:58.
“I feel that I ran okay,” Chrysler said. “It was my best performance time wise of the year, so all the Glory to God for that. The competition was fun and motivating and its as inspiring to have the opportunity to race with some fast girls.
“As a team it was a nice rebound to punch our ticket to states after a runner-up finish at sectionals last year. We used it to focus on some individual goals, while also flexing the strength of our program.”
Lily Lafever finished 88th in 21:42.9 and Stella Palladino was 96th in 22:05.7.
Abigail McHugh was 103rd in 22:33.1 and the lone senior in the Owego top five, Maddison McEvoy, was 110th in 23:52.4.
“We all ran for each other,” McEvoy said. “It was a great environment to be a part of. This was always the goal and the fact we accomplished this was huge.
“We had an amazing season and left it all out there and it was beyond special to finish it at states with this group. I wouldn’t have wanted to go on this journey with any other girls. Like we all said after sectionals, we are a family. I’m proud of all of them and thankful I got to spend this time with such an amazing team.”
Senior Sidney Senko was 116th in 25:55.7 followed by teammate Carolyn Schuyler in 26:03.1.
“I thoroughly enjoyed getting to race at states as a team this year,” Chrysler said. “And, I think we all race better knowing we’re in it together.”
This was a new course for states, at Queensbury for the first time since 2013 this year, and the River Hawks enjoyed running at it.
“The location this year was nice and flat with a couple difficult hills and the scenery in the woods was beautiful,” Chrysler said.
BOYS PLACE THREE IN TOP 100The Owego boys had all three of their runners earn top 100 finishes in the boys’ Class B race on Saturday.
Javan Belokur, who won the sectional title, was 59th in 17:02.4 and Daniel Dunn was just five spots back, taking 64th in 17:10.7.
Sullivan O’Donnell, who finished second at sectionals, was 87th on Saturday in a time of 17:29.7.
