ON TAP TODAY: SECTION IV CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, VOLLEYBALL SEMIFINALS HEADLINE THURSDAY'S ACTION (2024-11-07)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Harriers from all six Tioga County school will be in action at the Section IV Cross Country Championships this morning, while Tioga, Candor, and S-VE will look to advance to their respective Section IV championship volleyball matches.

Newark Valley has also added a football game to its schedule, and will host Harpursville-Afton tonight.

CROSS COUNTRY

Section IV Championships at Chenango Valley State Park, 9 a.m.:
All six Tioga County teams — both boys and girls — will be in action today with berths to the New York State Championships on the line.

Owego's Jaelyn Chrysler is the best bet to represent Tioga County at States, with Waverly Mackenzie Chamberlain and Harper Minaker also candidates to make the trip to Queensbury High School for the state meet.

On the boys side, Owego's Javon Belokur and Sullivan O'Donnell  are good bets to advance to States, and Magavin Allen also has a good shot.

VOLLEYBALL
Section IV Playoffs
Class C Semifinals
7-Edison (8-10), 3-S-VE (12-3), 4- Trumansburg (9-8) at 1-Tioga (13-3), 3:30 p.m.:
Edison advanced to pool play with a 3-1 upset of second-seeded Walton, while S-VE swept Dryden, Trumansburg topped B-G, 3-1, and Tioga swept Harpursville-Afton.

The top two teams advance to the Class C Championship match Saturday at 11 a.m. at Tioga.

Class D Semifinals
2-Delhi (12-2), 3-Deposit-Hancock (11-5), 5-Newfield (9-5) at 1-Candor (12-1), 3:30 p.m.:
Newfield advanced to semi-final pool play with a win over Oxford Tuesday night, while Delhi, D-H and host Candor received byes.

The top two teams advance to the Class D Championship match Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tioga.

FOOTBALL
Harpursville-Afton (0-8) at Newark Valley (1-8) 6 p.m.:
The Cardinals are coming off a 51-13 loss to playoff-bound divisional rival Deposit-Hancock, while the Hornets dropped a 31-3 decision to Walton.
