IAC JV VOLLEYBALL: S-VE EDGES CANDOR IN THREE SETS IN SMALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (24 PHOTOS) (2024-11-01)

SPENCER — S-VE dropped the first set, but rallied to win a three-set thriller over Candor to capture the IAC Small School junior varsity volleyball championship.

The Coyotes won the first set 25-23, but the Panthers bounced back to win the next two sets by identical scores of 25-20.

"I couldn’t be more proud of these girls," said S-VE JV coach Sydney Meyers. "They worked hard all season to get here. It was an amazing feeling winning the championship after we fell short last year. 

"I’ve seen improvement in every single one of these girls throughout the season," added Meyers. "Everyone played their role tonight."

Jayde Bailey led S-VE with 10 service points and eight digs, while Maddy Ashby had eight points, six kills, 13 setter assists, and 11 digs, and Trinity Dasher had five points (two aces), 11 kills, one block, 13 digs, and five assists.

Riley Koch added six points and four digs in the win, while Molly Rice had four points and three digs, Elaina Middlebrook registered three kills, one block, and five digs, Reece Hickey recorded three kills and two blocks, and Emma Neish chipped in with seven digs.

Montana Vorhis led Candor with seven points (two aces) and four kills, while Zoe Travis had seven points, Ashlan Heidl had six points, two kills, and seven assists, and Lizzy Murray had two points, three kills, and nine assists.

Val Polanco-Gil registered five kills for the Coyotes, while Ava Anderson had four points, Allison Oakes added two kills, and Nora Young chipped in with two points.

DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF
CANDOR, S-VE ADVANCE TO FINALS

The regular season ended with Candor, S-VE, and Groton all tied with 10-2 records.

On Tuesday, Tioga hosted a three-way divisional playoff with Candor finishing the night with a 3-1 record, topping S-VE 25-22 and 25-23, and splitting with Groton, winning 25-16, and dropping the second set 25-21.

S-VE advanced, thanks in large part, to its sweep of Groton by scores of 26-24 and 25-20 to start the night.

Lizzy Murray led Candor with 16 points (two aces), 13 assists, and six kills, while Ava Anderson had 15 points, including five aces, and two kills, Montana Vorhis had seven points (two aces), Nora Young had seven points (four aces), and Ashlan Heidl added two points, six kills, and nine assists.
