ON TAP TODAY: OWEGO HOSTS M-E IN BATTLE OF UNBEATENS IN FINAL WEEKEND OF REGULAR SEASON (2024-11-01)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Football's regular season in Tioga County comes to an end tonight with the "Game of the Year" — unbeaten Owego hosts unbeaten Maine-Endwell in a battle of state ranked teams — as the headliner.

SVEC and Newark Valley are also in action, and a pair of Tioga County rivals — S-VE and Candor — battle it out for the IAC Small School volleyball championship at TC3.

FOOTBALL
Maine-Endwell (8-0 overall, 4-0 Div. III) at Owego (7-0, 4-0), 7 p.m.:
The River Hawks are coming off a forfeit win over Johnson City on the heels of a 56-6 win over Chenango Valley in Week 6, while the Spartans rolled to a 42-14 win over Norwich.

The Spartans, who reached the state finals last year after winning back-to-back to state titles in 2021-22, are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class B, while Owego is ranked 10th.

Owego has outscored its opponents by an average of 38.7 to 7.4 points per game, and its closest game this season was a 28-6 win over Norwich. The River Hawk defense had only give up double-digit points in two games — a 55-20 win over Section III Westhill, and a 35-14 win over Horseheads.

Maine-Endwell has outscored its opponents by an average of 45.8 to 15.6 points per game. Only two of its games — Waverly (42-41) and Chenango Forks (21-14) — have been decided by less than 28 points.

The winner of the game will likely face the winner of Saturday's Chenango Valley-Oneonta game, while the loser will play Norwich in the Class B semifinals.

Schuyler (1-5) at SVEC (4-4), 7 p.m.: The Eagles are coming off an 18-6 win at Walton to clinch a Class D playoff berth, while the Storm rolled over Whitney Point, 44-6, for their first win of the season.

SVEC has outscored its opponents by an average of 23.5 to 23 points per game this season, while Schuyler has been outscored by an average of 45 to 19.2 points per game.

If Tioga beats B-G tonight, SVEC will take on the Tigers in the Class D semis next Saturday.

Newark Valley (1-7, 0-2 Div. VII) at Deposit-Hancock (7-1, 1-1), 7 p.m.: The Cardinals are coming off a 20-6 loss to state-ranked Bainbridge-Guilford, while the Eagles dropped a 56-28 decision at state-ranked Tioga.

Deposit-Hancock can clinch a postseason berth with a win, and a likely match-up against Division VI champ Delhi next Saturday.

Injury-riddled Newark Valley has been outscored by an average of 29 to 12.7 points per game, while D-H has outscored its opponents by an average of 46.1 to 22 points per game.

@ TCCC
S-VE (12-1) vs. Candor (12-1), 5 p.m.:
Longtime IAC rivals S-VE and Candor will play for the third time this season, this time with the Small School Championship on the line.

The Panthers won the first meeting in an epic five-set match, but the Coyotes answered with a sweep in their second meeting.

Both teams are highly-seeded in next week's Section IV playoffs.
