SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: THREE-TIME DEFENDING STATE CHAMP WHITNEY POINT BLANKS SVEC IN CLASS C SEMIFINALS (2024-10-30)

WHITNEY POINT — Three-time defending state champion Whitney Point got off to a quick start, and pulled away in the second half of a 9-0 win over SVEC here Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the Section IV, Class C playoffs.

Despite the loss, SVEC head coach Abby Gentile is proud of her team's effort this season.

"I am so proud of the way that the Eagles performed this season.

"With a final record of 8-10. we doubled our wins from last year," said Gentile. "These players accomplished so much this season with the Division 3 championship, qualifying for sectionals, and hosting and winning a sectional first-round game."

Gentile's squad had the bare minimum in terms of numbers with 11 girls in uniform.  

"As we were getting ready to play in (Tuesday) night's game, and I see 25 players for Whitney Point walk out, I was reminded of just how amazing our small, but mighty team has been," she said.

"These 11 girls devoted themselves to our team this year," she noted. "There wasn’t a sub to come in when they were sick or injured. They had to fight through, and they always did.

"I couldn’t be more proud of these ladies," added Gentile.

Colleen Hildebrandt opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles just 71 seconds into the game.

Sadee Short scored twice in an 80-second span to extend the Whitney Point advantage to 3-0 with 9:59 remaining in the first quarter.

The SVEC defense kept the game at 3-0 for nearly 35 minutes, but the Golden Eagles scored three goals in a 4 1/2-minute span late in the third quarter to up the lead to 6-0.

Kylan Smith scored the first two goals of the third quarter for the Point, and Emma Davies added the third.

Genevieve Huston added three fourth-quarter goals for Whitney Point to provide the final margin.

Whitney Point had a 33-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 11-0 edge in penalty corners.

Senior Katelyn Klym recorded 22 saves in the cage for the Eagles.

"We will deeply miss our three seniors - Aubrey Catablan, Katelyn Klym, and Lily Kunzman," said Gentile. "They were great leaders this year who really helped to bond our team together."
