SECTION IV FOOTBALL: OWEGO CRUSHES CV, 56-6, TO GRAB DIVISION LEAD (2024-10-18)

Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Owego racked up more than 460 yards offense to crush Chenango Valley, 56-6, in Section IV Football Conference action here Friday night.

The victory gave the River Hawks sole possession of the top spot in the Division III standings at 3-0, although Maine-Endwell is expected to move into a tie for first Saturday afternoon.

A pair of first-quarter touchdown runs by Joseph Palladino gave Owego more than enough points to improve to 6-0 overall.

The senior tailback scored on an 8-yard run early in the period and from nine yards out late in the frame. Adam Arhbal, a perfect 8-for-8 on PAT kicks, made it a 14-0 lead.

The River Hawks would strike again on their first possession of Q2 as Jack Buchsbaum spun out of a tackle at his own 20 and eluded another would-be tackler further down the field en route to an 89-yard scoring run at 10:46.

CV would come back with a 27-yard Ben Kresge-to-Alex Beppler TD pass at 6:53 to cut the gap to 21-6.

The Warriors were unsuccessful with the onside kick attempt and Owego added another TD 27 seconds later as Buchsbaum turned an Elijah Lewis screen pass into a 51-yard TD and a 28-6 advantage.

The River Hawks’ next possession turned into an 84-yard Palladino TD run up the gut and a 35-6 lead at 4:11.

Owego would put the pressure on to foil a punt attempt and back-up QB Garret Phelps scored on a 1-yard keeper with less than two minutes remaining in the first half to give the visitors a 42-6 cushion at the break.

Phelps added a 23-yard TD pass to Dylan Brace at 9:23 of the third period and Stefano Scherrer scored on a two-yard run at 3:09 of the period to make it 56-6.

The River Hawks rolled up 375 yards on the ground with Palladino chalking up 153 on 10 carries. Buchsbaum had one run for 89 yards, Scherrer contributed 68 on seven rushes and Lewis added 28 more on one run. Brace, Phelps, Collin Monell, Evan Wasielewski combined for 42 yards on eight carries.

Lewis was 3-for-6 through the air for 70 yards and Phelps completed his only attempt for 23. Buchsbaum had two receptions for 59 yards, Brace had one for 23 and Evan English had one for 11 more.

Owego (3-0, 6-0) hosts Johnson City (0-3, 1-5) next Friday. CV slipped to 1-2 (3-4 overall).
