IAC BOYS SOCCER: SVEC EDGES NOTRE DAME, 1-0; CLINCHES DIVISION TITLE (19 PHOTOS) (2024-10-16)

SVEC’S BANKS RECORDS 100TH CAREER VICTORY

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — SVEC scored a goal early, and made it stand in a 1-0 win over Notre Dame that clinched the IAC South Large School Division title.

The win was also the 100th career victory for SVEC coach Jason Banks.

"Coach Lanning and I are really proud of how the team handled themselves today,” said Banks. “We knew going into the game that Elmira Notre Dame had an organized defense and a quality keeper, so we had to take advantage of the few chances we were going to get.”

Kyle Jantz, off an assist from Noah Banks, put the Eagles on the board in the 14th minute, and the Eagles, despite the absence of starting keeper Sirron Irvin, finished off the clean sheet.

SVEC’s leading scorer Class Huenecke replaced Irvin, and recorded four saves.

"Unfortunately our starting goalie had to miss the game, however,  Claas (Huenecke) and our defense really stepped up and denied their attack,” said Banks. “Defenders do not always get the credit in the score line, but today and all season our defense has come up big for our team."

SVEC had a 7-5 edge in shots-on-goal.

SVEC will face Lansing in the overall IAC Championship game Saturday at Tompkins-Cortland Community College at 6 p.m.

“We are looking forward to the rematch with Lansing in the IAC championship game,” said Banks.
