SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: SVEC RALLIES TO TOP OWEGO, 4-2; CLINCHES FIRST POSTSEASON BERTH SINCE 2019 (2024-10-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Freshman Hayden Gehres keyed a second-half rally that lifted SVEC to a 4-2 win over Owego that clinched the Eagles first Section IV field hockey postseason appearance since 2019.

“I am so proud of the way the Eagles played tonight,” said SVEC coach Abby Gentile. “We got that early lead and then had a short stretch where we let up in the second quarter, allowing them to score two and take the lead away.

“But the girls didn’t fold,” noted Gentile. “They continued to work and it paid off with Hayden Gehres finding the goal three times in the second half to secure the win.”

Kendall Gentile scored less than three minutes into the game to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

The River Hawks, however, scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart early in the second quarter, and took a 2-1 lead into he halftime intermission.

Makayla Wilbur, off a feed from Aubrey Schmidt, scored with 13:26 remaining in the second quarter to tie the game, and Carsten Crawford — off an assist from Wilbur — scored with 11:46 remaining in the half to make it 2-1.

Gehres scored twice in a 39-second span late in the third quarter to give SVEC a 3-2 lead heading into the final stanza.

Gehres capped off her hat trick to provide the final margin with 4:08 remaining in the contest.

SVEC had a 9-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.

Katelyn Klym recorded three saves in the cage for the Eagles.

SVEC, now 7-8, closes out the regular season Thursday when it hosts powerhouse Whitney Point.
