STAC GIRLS SOCCER: OWEGO SCORES EARLY; HOLDS OFF ELMIRA IN 2-1 WIN (2024-10-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the game, and made them stand in a 2-1 win over Elmira here Thursday night in STAC girls soccer action.

“We played one heck of a game,” said Owego girls soccer coach Laurel Evans. “There was a good chunk of it where we were nervous, but the girls stepped up, filled gaps where necessary and worked together to get this big win.

“I’m lucky with so many girls who can play all over the field, that’s what helped us stay in there,” she noted. “Elmira is a very physical team, which worked to our advantage for free kicks … we kept our composure and were able to capitalize.

“I cannot express how proud we are of all the girls tonight,” added Evans. “They all stepped up, didn’t give up and worked hard as a team. We are doing what we practice and learning together and it shows with this win.”

Ashlyn Dalton found the back of the net about 6 1/2 minutes into the game to give Owego a quick 1-0 lead.

Liz Reigle, off an assist from Dalton, scored about two minutes later to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The River Hawk defense kept Elmira off the board for the remainder of the first half, but  Addison Taft scored for the Express in the opening minute of the second half to close the gap to 2-1

Owego’s defense kept Elmira at bay over the remaining 39-plus minutes to preserve the win.

Elmira had a 12-8 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Olivia Dodge had nine saves in net for the River Hawks.

Owego, now 6-6, returns to action Tuesday at Seton Catholic.
