STAC BOYS SOCCER: OWEGO CLINCHES CENTRAL DIVISION TITLE WITH 1-0 OVERTIME WIN OVER FORKS (2024-10-07)

BINGHAMTON — Vasil Brich’s overtime goal lifted unbeaten Owego to a 1-0 win over Chenango Forks, and a STAC Central Division boys soccer title here Monday night.

“We knew we were going to have to go to war as this game was a crucial matchup,” said Owego coach Alessio De Michele. “We are delighted to come away with a victory.

“We really grew into the game and started controlling the tempo, but needed to do a better job of getting the goals from the quality build up play,” he noted.

“I think this was a big moment for this group to have to dig deep when things weren’t going our way and still figuring out the problem of the opposition, and not concede any chances to a competitive team,” added De Michele. “We are enjoying the ride every day.”

After more than 87 minutes of scoreless soccer, Matt Higgins set up Brich for the game-winner.

The River Hawks, who beat Forks 2-1 in their first meeting, improves to 11-0 overall, and 10-0 in league play, while the Blue Devils (10-2-1 overall) fall to 7-2-1 in STAC play.

Owego returns to action Thursday at Horseheads.
